When Gripped by Fear and Anxiety -- A Recap of the Last Few Months

It's been a crazy season for us these past few months.

Every time I've tried to write about it all in this space, the words have fallen flat. Come up empty. Felt all garbled and messy. I couldn't make things make sense, in part because my life wasn't making a whole lot of sense.

The fear and anxiety that gripped my heart and body so often the past few months is frightening, awful, embarrassing, and consuming. I hate even admitting it... but I will because I know we all need to talk about it more.

In November I began having more anxiety and panic than I'd had in quite a while. My anxiety issues also cause my body to physically react, causing other issues, which thereby make me more anxious. It's a vicious cycle.

I was also having constant daily headaches and painful flare ups, and it all escalated as Elijah got croup! AGAIN!! This happened while we were at my mom's traveling over Thanksgiving. Right after that Tim got a sinus infection, so of course before he was even fully over that, I got slammed by the flu for 24 hours and ... you'd think it'd be over, but nope... on the tail-end of that began a viral upper respiratory infection that left me hoarse and barely able to squeak out words. Overall I was sick for 3.5 weeks, getting better right at Christmas. After we were back home from traveling to see my family before Christmas. Figures.

It was a brutal time.

We figured out that my anxiety and panic was due to some pretty major stress and anxiety as a result of being really overwhelmed. One look at Elijah and I could have a panic attack.

{Disclaimer: let me explain that this had nothing to do with my job or workplace. It was all completely related to parenting and personal health.}

It was terrible. In part it was hard to talk about with anyone, even those closest to me because it was embarrassing. It made me feel like a horrible mother. I would just be hit with waves of panic as I looked at pictures of Elijah, read information about raising toddlers, or whenever I was at home alone with him.

My biggest fear? That I'd die and leave him without a mother. Or that I'd collapse and he'd be on his own for endless hours. {With no rational reason for fearing these things. My health is fine in that sense!} Now that he's a toddler who is more aware of his environment and surroundings, I couldn't wrap my head around what could happen to him if something happened to me, with my husband an hour away at work.

I was terrified. Irrational? Yes. Unfounded? Yes. But I couldn't shake it.

The severe intensity of bad, crippling anxiety went on for weeks. Every day when we were home together I had to get us out of the house when he was awake. Walks outside, going to the mall or Cabela's or Target, being around people. Just in case.

It was utter craziness.

This all hit right at the time of the Daylight Saving Time changeover. Darkness encroaching earlier. Days feeling longer. My body taking the better part of two weeks to recover from something seemingly as simple as a time change. Cold temperatures and thereby fewer walks. Limited playtime outside. Walls caving in on me at home.

Random changes in our lives also added to my stress and anxiety - hubby possibly starting to work-from-home sometime but not certain and timeframe unsettled for months. So many questions about how this would impact us, our marriage, and our parenting. Terrifying fears that I might be pregnant again. Shook me to my very core and hated myself for that, but scared about those weird health issues {that later, as it turns out, are actually 100% anxiety related... figures!}.

No more morning nap for Elijah. Crippling fears about long, longggg days and how I wasn't sure how to fill it. The complete dread of potty-training him. His mobility and awareness - of everything. His constant watching of me and my overwhelming fears that I was screwing it all up in front of his watchful eyes. Disciplining him. Oh the discipline. Oh man. That was hard to get through between 12-18 months. Starting to understand but not quite? Ugh! Constantly feeling overwhelmed about feeding him because he's sooo picky and will. not. eat. what I want him to eat!! Doesn't matter what I do or try, he so often fights it and it's utterly draining. Not able to keep up with the chaos of the holidays, traveling, illnesses, AND keep our house under control. Mess was out-of-control. Elijah was not sleeping well. Ever. Every night he'd be waking up at least 1-3 times, sometimes for 1-2 hours at a time.

My stepbrother suddenly dying of a heart attack at age 45. My mother-in-law having a mild stroke {gratefully she's doing great now and recovered really well!}.

None of it settled well with me. November. December. January.

Those were really hard, really grueling, really lonely months.

Of course my husband was well aware of it all {or at least most of it} but what really ended up helping me were the regular conversations and prayer sessions with my mom. Talking to someone who had been through the thick of it, raised us kids mostly on her own after I was 5, and had come out of it much stronger and more godly than many thought possible. She's one of the strongest women I know and is such a prayer warrior.

During this time I clung to God's Word and His promises. I shed a lot, lot, lot of tears on the phone with my mom. Melting down and being prayed over were sometimes exactly what I needed to be able to just breathe again.

Also in the midst of this, our pastor was going through a sermon series that was hitting me very, very hard personally. A lot of things to think over and deal with. Things that brought attacks from Satan as we dealt with strongholds in my life. And I know I wasn't the only one. It was an exhausting, draining time, and even our pastor said it was so for him.

I saw both my primary care doctor and my holistic doctor/chiropractor during this time. I had one panicked phone call to my doctor that caused a visit the next day for a check-up and though everything was fine, another medication was added to my repertoire. Ugh. I was also taking my anti-anxiety medication as needed, and for the first time had one day where I took two of them in one day {which is fine but totally got me jittery and I hated it}.

I was feeling very much at the end of my rope and sanity.

I mentioned to my chiropractor the additional medication, and he in turn introduced me to a female hormone supplement. That. was. amazing. !!!! {Don't worry, it's all-natural, nothing hokey going on there with hormone stuff.}

He was confident that this was a cause of hormonal imbalances - having not gotten back to normal postpartum, as well as some blood sugar and/or thyroid issues. It was making me all out of whack and he said we needed to work on me being more balanced. These supplements have truly been a God-send!

I had been continuing to see him every 1-2 weeks for check-ups, treatments, and adjustments for these issues. And voila!

I've been doing so much better. I still have some tough moments, but nothing at all compared to what it was.

In January, Elijah had more issues that required even having an emergency visit to the chiropractor {who is really more of an alternative care/primary care doctor than what would come to your mind when you think chiropractor}.

As we dove deeper into working with him and learning more of what he can do for us, we've been amazed and completely taken aback.

Alternative medicine is definitely agreeing with us! We are learning so much and changing the way that we look at medical care completely. Our doctor is incredible and truly an extraordinary gift! I was surprised because I had no idea that this could all be this insanely helpful.

I'm not saying this is for everyone, but it's certainly working for us!

Right after the medications helped me level out, our pastor also had a message that helped me see that I wasn't alone in my struggles with fear and anxiety. For some reason I'd been thinking I was crazy.

No, really. Crazy.

Like I was the only Christian having such a hard battle with this. I was beating myself up constantly. He said not to {and so much more, but you get the idea}.

It was a total relief. To realize I wasn't alone. That it's a spiritual battle.

That broken strongholds {like fear & anxiety} will battle to be rebuilt. And we cannot let them. We fight. When we fail, we get back up again. Every word he preached was like a breath of fresh air to my soul at that time. I desperately needed to hear it, and leaned in on every word. It's been life-changing!!

I also did some research about anxiety disorders. I've been trained more fully on blood pressure issues and what to watch for. I know way more than I ever did before about issues I've struggled with for years. It's been hard, but also really good to be more educated.

So hard. So good too.

Life always seems like it would be SO much easier if we never had these crazy hard things to go through, but then we'd never find the positive or learn what we need to grow. That's always a hard truth to let sink in!

I'm pretty much completely past everything from those hard months. I've learned and grown a lot. I can safely say I'm not who I was back in October, that's for sure.

Elijah and I find our days very full now. Full and wonderful, relaxing and memorable, challenging and exhausting, good and joy-filled. I don't worry about any of the things that freaked me out so much previously that all just hit at once. As I read more information and get more educated on all of those things, I find myself at so much more ease. The trick for me is not to fear the unknown, but to just research and understand it better!

The other thing has been just really, truly soaking Elijah in for who he is, and not worrying about the stage he's in. As I grow in knowing myself more as a mother and how I want to handle things with him every day, I see that everything will work out just fine.

He's nearly 21 months. And we are in shock and awe of just how incredible he is!! So smart, so funny, so sweet, so loving. What an awesome gift from God!

I know I have nothing to fear. I'm still working on never having bad anxiety. It's a sprint, not a marathon... right?! ;)

Game Night & Hosting In the Midst of Fibro

Despite the Fibro, you all know I love to live life to the fullest that I possibly can.

When we first moved into our house years ago, I hosted a bunch of girly parties for scrapbooking, clothes, etc. I loved hosting Tim's family for holidays and my family for weekend trips.

Then a couple years after moving here, I developed Fibro.

How incredibly frustrating. I spent years just trying to slide by and survive. I was having a really hard time and rarely felt well enough to do much beyond just work and church and family.

Then I found ways that worked for me to feel better and ways I could push through without pushing too hard. I found methods for coping and decided I wasn't going to let Fibro rule my life. Meaning that whenever I could, I would still do the things I love.

That has meant scaling back from what I really want to do, but still being able to do those things at least to some extent.

I slowly started having people over more often. Hosted Tim's family 4 years ago for Easter. Then again this year. Last year I hosted a Pampered Chef party and I loved every second of it. It was like the party hosting itch had sprung again, but then it faded quickly in the chaos of just regular living.

There were times in there where it wasn't just about the Fibro, it was about being embarrassed. Our house is filled in every nook and cranny, and not organized in ways I wish it could be if I really had the time and energy. But I had to finally get over the "my house isn't good enough" feeling, and decided that I really wanted my hospitality and hosting juices to flow fully again, no matter what my house might look like. I just wanted to open the doors and love on and serve people again.

So I did.

It reminded me how much people just love being together - they don't care particularly where they're at or what it looks like. They get to see you.

And it's been SO incredibly rewarding!!!! My favorite thing now though is to invite couple groups to our home {or get them together outside our home too which has been great - love growing in relationships & community!}. It's been most amazing to have groups of people over who are in the same life place. Nothing against anyone else, but there's just something there to connect with when you know you're in the same place, struggling with the same things, and connecting in ways you couldn't otherwise.

It's been a huge blessing. I don't have any pictures from our first group night like this at our house, but last Friday night we had two couples over from work where I work with both the guys, and it's been a true joy getting to know their wives too!

I feel like we've finally hit a good stride with hosting again and have a good group of people that we hit it off with and enjoy hanging out together. It's not a drain and has been an important part of our growth lately. Since we aren't part of a small group or something at our church, this is where we find our community. And we love it {me more so of course since I'm the extrovert, but thankfully Tim goes along with it and has been really enjoying it too}!!

So here we are with our fun, crazy, godly, hilarious group of people from last Friday:

AJ {Bible typesetter} & Kevin {designer} being silly

Catherine & Bekah - love these girls
and that they pose so well for the camera!! :)

We grilled. Good stuff.

Used leftover fun stuff from Easter one week before :)

Ready to eat. Love the AJ & Kev's poses. Hilarity.

Laughing at some videos.

Attempting some crazy magnet game. So fun!

Warm cookies, ice cream, & chocolate syrup - yes puh-lease!!

20 minutes after AJ & Catherine explained to us all how to play the complicated card game Bang! we finally started. Got confused. Had to keep having it explained.
Yes, Bekah is flipping through my Hunger Games magazine....clearly focused on the game. Ahem.

It was overwhelming at first. Our heads nearly exploded.

Then it got funny.

Really, really, really, reallyyyy funny!!!

And still confusing....

Ooooohhhhhh I get it!

Fun stuff. Seriously. so. fun.

We haven't laughed that hard in a long time. It was refreshing, relaxing, and rejuvenating. We are so thankful for these friends and the hours and hours and hours of hanging out at our house. It was amazing.

We are also very thankful that my body has been allowing me to do these get togethers without any major repercussions!

Whew. Because I really want to keep doing this.

Living life. Hosting. Loving on people. Serving them. Laughing together. Breaking bread together. Relaxing together. Crying together. Praying together. Sharing in life together.

Love this phase of life and am content, blessed, and thankful.

My Proclamations for 2012

Goals, kinda. Resolutions, ughh, hate that word, fail every time. I liked it when I heard someone else say "This is my proclamation for 2012. Just stuff I'm hoping to do, and how I want to have an impact."

Me likey. :) Me stealy....

~~~
My Proclamations for 2012:
I will learn more about Jesus this year, and what it really means to love & serve those in need.
I want to make a difference and change the world a bit more this year by impacting my little corner of the universe.
I want to grow in compassion, and increase my giving to those who need it.
I want to grow in loving on our Compassion child, and will send her a letter every month.
I want to remember to serve my husband and take care of our house more, because if I don't do that well, I can't serve others well.
I want wayyyy more of Jesus and others this year, and less of me.
I want to work on so many personal things, but I also know that I can't do it all at once and I have to allow room for grace and time. Like eat less & better, exercise more, stop a couple bad habits, be a better blogger, get better at organizing & printing pictures, remember I can only do so much, tackle my house one portion at a time instead of letting it overwhelm me, and do more to figure out some Fibromyalgia stuff.
~~~

How about you, friends? What do you hope to see, do, accomplish, and change in the world in 2012?

New Year / New Start

First of all, Happy New Year!!

Secondly, an array of thoughts....

Over the past several months, I was feeling really overwhelmed.

Overwhelmed by all the parties, stuff to do, shopping, family get togethers, traveling, etc. Overwhelmed by not being good enough. Overwhelmed by not feeling like I could ever measure up. Overwhelmed by getting sick and feeling miserable. Overwhelmed by lists of way too much.

I felt I had so many things I needed to fix, do, correct, etc, that I was starting to spin out of control and negatively react instead of proactively just work on what I could when I could.

But there's something about a long break, a new year, a clean slate, and a fresh start that just utterly refreshes the soul.

As well as getting a new haircut & highlights :)
thanks to my amazing sister-in-law Diana!!!

I've come away from the past 2 1/2 weeks {of not working} feeling rejuvenated, more content, and relaxed.

More connected with my Savior. More connected with family and friends. Dealing with Fibromyalgia flares. Overcoming fears and anxieties. Facing my 12th married Christmas without children, and seeing a whole new side to God's kindness and sovereignty in the midst of it all. Spoiling my nieces, nephews, and friends kids. Stealing away time with hubster. Watching oodles of movies. Celebrating the new year with family. Crying a lot. Laughing a lot.

Unfortunately, both of us had bouts with the flu, followed by my dad's visit over new year's ending up with him having the flu. So many people we know have been sick this season, and it's been rough! But we've all survived it and in the end, are reminded that even in the midst of illness God's goodness shines through.

While we are all busily thinking through our goals or resolutions for the new year, as we try to remember to work grace into our goals so we aren't overwhelmed or dropping them in 2 weeks, and as we remember just because we are entering a new year doesn't mean we've suddenly reached the ability to be perfect... may we all take a serious chill pill and remember why we're all here in the first place.

That as we come face-to-face with our fears over what may come in 2012, and as we make steps forward to become more of who we want to be & who God is shaping us into in 2012... may we do it all to the glory & honor of God!

We only have one chance to live 2012. Let's make it the very best that it can be!

Now off to see if I can make one of my goals happen for real this year... get to bed on time. And now that I'm 35 minutes overdue for that as we watch the Iowa Caucuses come to a close, I will bid you a good night and a great new year!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

I'm still working on my very long post about last weekend's experience babysitting a 2 year old for 2 days. I can't wait to share it all with you, but it's not only been a tough post to write, I'm also having a hard time keeping it short. ;) So alas, it'll have to wait a bit, there are just more important things right now... like with Thanksgiving tomorrow!

This is the first year in two years that we haven't traveled over Thanksgiving. And I must admit, I'm really happy about that! I think we needed a traveling break, and since we've both been fighting colds, it's even better! Plus getting to shop our Chicago area stores on Black Friday also makes us uber happy. :)

Whoop whoop!

Tomorrow we'll be sleeping in a little, I'll be doing some baking & cooking, watching the Thanksgiving Day Parade {I flip between NYC & Chicago's}, and then we'll head over to Tim's brother's house for the big feast with part of his family as well as his sister-in-law's family. I'm really stoked! Then we'll likely wrap up the day by watching either Elf or Home Alone, and looking at all the Black Friday ads.

In the meantime, I wanted to leave you with a post from my favorite inspirational blog, (in)courage, in preparation for this wonderful holiday:

While I want to feed tummies, more importantly, my desire is to feed souls.
Will you join me in re-evaluating the check list and prioritizing the essentials for your weekend?
I’ve scribbled my new “To-Do” List.
Feed Gratitude. As I nurture this quality, joy thrives.
Feed Flexibility. Our best laid plans may not happen. Guests will be late. Food may get cold, but in the scheme of things, it’s nothing.
Feed Patience. (Lots of Patience)  A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel. Proverbs 15:18Feed Laughter. There’s nothing better than cultivating an atmosphere of deep belly laughing after a satisfying meal.
Feed Contentment. With all the Black Friday Sales, it’s difficult to remember the balance of “need vs. want.”
Feed Compassion. Even though Old Aunt Sue has shared the same story for the fifteenth time, make her feel as if it is the first.
Feed Encouragement.
We’re fragile. A blessed word makes hearts soar.
Feed Forgiveness.
This is the year. Lay it at His feet. Let our Lord carry the burden. Extend forgiveness. Experience freedom.

As I savor the moments of family time this weekend, my “To Do” List reminds me:  Feed Them.

Read the rest here at (in)courage

May you & your family find Thanksgiving to be a blessing, and may you spend it focusing on all of the positives in your life... no matter what they are. Big or small, spend some time tomorrow just being grateful.

I am very thankful for all of you - my blogging friends!!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Uniqueness

When we moved into our house, Tim immediately looked at our kitchen and wanted to put in an old-looking phone.

We love it. It's unique and it's fun.

Every time I look at it lately, I think about how unique it is... and how unique each of us as individuals are.

With our own little quirks, different noses, different body types, different face shapes, different opinions and insights, different hair, and on and on....

It's truly amazing isn't it?! God made each of us unique in His image. I am in awe.

Matthew 10:30-31

The Little Things

Sometimes it's just the little things in life that make all the difference.

Like when your Grandpa's visitation is starting up and the family is on edge, and the funeral home staff bring out a tray of water, cups, mints, and hand sanitizer {which immediately made me pipe up to my germaphobic brother and he came running for his first dose of it!}.

Like when you're having a rough pain day and a coworker who has been gone on her honeymoon for two weeks talks you into doing lunch even though you're not sure you can manage it, and the fresh air, conversation, laughs, talking about weddings & honeymoons end up being exactly what you need!

Like when you've already made 3 stops on the way home and you're frustrated that you need to stop again to get milk, and hubster offers to do it for you.

Like when you're physically beaten down from laundry, running amok, helping rake leaves before suddenly realizing you've overdone it, and hubster offers to finish getting the last of the laundry from the dryer.

Like when you're on empty and a dear friend sends you an encouraging email with a reminder that you're everything you need to be for that friendship and that you'll never lose them no matter how real you get, how much you aren't around, or how much you mess up.

Like when you post on Facebook that you're in excruciating pain & fatigue and people lift you up in prayer.

Like when you don't think you can take another step and you pray for God to give you the strength to carry on, and suddenly you've done more things in the past half hour than you thought possible in your condition.

Like when you acknowledge that you badly need a vacation... and remember oh yeah, you're about to go on one!!!

Like when you're freezinggggg cold and wondering if you'll run into anyone to talk to at the church's 5k run on a different campus, and suddenly your sister-in-law, brother-in-law, & 1 year old nephew show up. Ahhh.

GOD IS SO GOOD!

Close Call

About 3 weeks ago, on my way home after work from a friend's house, I came the closest I've ever come to being in what very well could have been a fatal car accident.

It shook me to my very core.

You see, car accidents are a major fear of mine. I've been in enough of them to understand how it all works {only 1 was my fault, kind of}, and I came as close as I can imagine to losing hubster to a car accident except that he managed to walk away with just minor scrapes and bruises.

In the midst of my fears over losing a loved one tragically in a sudden accident, or getting into a bad accident myself... God quickly reminded me of his sovereignty over all circumstances.

Fearing it isn't going to change it. I've always known that, but somehow being afraid and imagining it happening to me makes it a bit easier to swallow when it actually does. It's a defense mechanism for me.

That extremely close call I had {with a car running a red light, as I turned left at a light, he would have hit smack into my driver's side door if God's protection... and some screeching, veering, and honking hadn't taken place just in the knick of time} made me really reflect. After I walked into the door at home just a few minutes later, after the hyperventilating-freaking-out moment ended, it really struck me how deeply wrong I'd been in that moment.

How wrong of me to somehow try to control things by fearing them. How wrong of me to think that some large amount of fear on my part would make God rethink his plans for me.

Fear and anxiety is not something easy to get rid of, but I'm working on it, especially in this area. I truly do believe God is sovereign... it's time I truly started acting like it.

This video of Matt Chandler {really just his voice, but I love what he says here} really makes it all that much more real to me.

Nobody dies early. Nobody. God's got it all under control.

Milestones

Every place we go in life, we hit milestones.

According to Merriam-Webster, milestone means: "a significant point in development".

Whether it's a wedding, a baby, our first home, our 50th wedding anniversary, learning to ride a bike, our first loose tooth, our first date, our first grandchild, or our first time stubbing our toe... we're always in-between another milestone.

While on Tuesday night's drive home {after a fun evening shopping with Annemarie}, I watched my car as it turned over to 50,000 miles.

Yes, I'm the kind of person that gets giddy seeing stuff like that... and takes pictures of it, while continuing to safely drive of course!

50,000.

That's a lot of miles.

We bought it around 20,000. So in just a few short years, this car has taken me 30,000 miles. Granted, many of those have been to and from work. But my car is not just about getting to and from work. It's about so much more.

I got to thinking about all the special places my car has taken me. The sights, the sounds, the tears I've shed within its doors, the laughter that has come through there, the groups of people smashed into it {not always legally, ahem....}, the music that's been jammed to, the sermons that have been listened to, the prayers cried out to God, the anger that's been vented to God in the midst of some really difficult circumstances, the sin and repentance that I've poured out to God there, and everything else I've experienced within the confines of that vehicle.

This car and I have done some serious bonding. Oh if that car could talk....

This was right after we bought it. Remind me to never have hair that short again. Mech.
It's made me think about all those things we take for granted. A working vehicle. A house to live in even if we feel like it's falling apart all around us. Food stuffed in the cupboards. Clean water every day. Fresh milk whenever we want.

And all the stuff.

Stuff that so many around the world might be really, really wishing and longing for all the while we're complaining that there's a drip in the faucet, the floor creaks, the check engine light is on again, or that a bug landed in our clean water.

We have lots of blessings. Lots of milestones to celebrate.

But what about those who don't? Let's celebrate, but while remembering those who have no one to celebrate with. Let's praise God for our blessings, and pray for & give to those less fortunate.

Milestones. They are special and worth soaking in, but not at the expense of forgetting what's behind us and how far we've come or how far we have yet to go.

50,000.

May I have another 50,000 miles ahead with this great car, and 50,000 miles of life ahead of me!
