Last Friday I had the opportunity to go into Chicago for work. We were recording an upcoming audio book, and since I oversee our audio book line, I wanted to experience it first-hand.
It was incredible.
And I soaked in all the moments of going through a crazy rush hour crowd of people [versus what I do every day with traffic]. I used to do this every day for a year. Now as I reflect, I find that I loved coming into the city every day, despite the downfalls. I don't want to go back to it, but the occasional refresher course is fun. :)
In the midst of all of it, I thought about all of the people hurrying around me, what their lives were like... some were very happy, some were very agitated, some were uncertain, and everyone was definitely in a hurry. I stepped aside to take pictures, process what was going on around me, pray over these people, and think about how often we hurry through our lives without stopping to pay attention to what's going on all around us.
I know that all of these people needed to hurry. I just couldn't help but think for myself how I needed to take it slow [and especially now with the Fibro knew this was very important, and my boss had even reminded me to do so!] and how I should utilize this time to think, reflect, process, and pray.
So I did. A lot. And I just kept thinking of that song "Give Me Your Eyes". Because I want to see people the way God sees them. Broken. Hurting. Wounded. Desperately needing a Savior. Trying to find ways I can help.
Giving extra tips. Giving a tip totally unnecessarily to a random guy on the street who was more than thrilled to help me hail a cab [probably stood off to the side laughing at me for a minute before he came up to help, LOL!]. Talking about what I do and why with my cab driver. Smiling. Getting out of the way of people in a hurry. Praying. Thanking God for such a beautiful city. Praying for the homeless on the streets. Those going hungry. Those who need something that only God can give to them.
Wanting to have an influence on making this world, and the city of Chicago, a better and brighter place.
How can you impact the world around you today? Stop and think the next time you see someone who is in a hurry, rude, or frustrated. Pray for God to give you His eyes for a moment, and see them through a different light.
Look down from a broken sky
Traced out by the city lights
My world from a mile high
Best seat in the house tonight
Touch down on the cold black top
Hold on for the sudden stop
Breath in the familiar shock
Of confusion and chaos
All those people going somewhere
Why have I never cared
Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Step out on a busy street
See a girl and our eyes meet
Does her best to smile at me
To hide what’s underneath
There's a man just to her right
Black suit and a bright red tie
Too ashamed to tell his wife
He's out of work, He's buying time
All those people going somewhere
Why have I never cared
Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
I’ve been here a million times
A couple of million eyes
Just move and pass me by
I swear I never thought that I was wrong
I want a second glance
Give me a second chance
To see the way you’ve seen the people all along
Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see...
Let's all go out there and try to make more of a difference in this world for Christ. Especially as Thanksgiving approaches and so many others across the globe won't have any food, clothes, warmth, or presents for the holidays.
What are you doing to help make a difference?
